furniture moving

wednesday night i was eating a nice dinner with laura paz (who was in town for a few days) when i got paged to go back to work. we'd had a power outage and i was on call so i was one of the many called in. the startup went relatively well even though i ended up staying all night, getting off at 7:30 thurs morning. i slept all day trying to recover and milled around the house and watched tv most of the afternoon. that night melanie called me and asked me if i'd help her move some furniture. she was getting a new bedroom suit the next day and needed to move her old stuff out. i agreed to help and went over there. she only had to move a dresser since she had already moved a chest and a desk by herself. during the moving of the dresser (and the subsequent moving of the chest and desk again) i realized one of the key differences in the two of us. my only criteria used in deciding where a particular piece of furniture should go was whether or not it would physically fit in the proposed location. she, on the other hand, was much more concerned with how it fit with the decor of the room. it didn't bother me to put it where she wanted and i guess i'm glad some people think about that kind of thing but its just interesting to me the different perspective each of us have.
