  • Google Presentations

Yesterday, Google Docs introduced a presentation application.  This is an online version that can be used as an alternative to PowerPoint.  It seems that Google is building a pretty compelling online office suite (and free!).  I already use Google Docs for spreadsheets and what little word processing I do, now I can use it for a simple presentation builder.  All that it is missing now is the ability to use these tools offline (a la Google Gears).  Once they get that worked out, I can easily see this being my recommendation for most folks who need simple office tools.

  • Accidental Salt

Last week a train derailed in Hattiesburg and they evacuated several homes because 2 rail cars started leaking chemicals. It turns out that the chemicals that were leaking were hydrochloric acid and sodium hydroxide. the article point out that “both can be harmful to humans.” However, as someone at work pointed out this morning, those two chemicals combine to form table salt and water (sodium hydroxide + hydrochloric acid ===> sodium chloride + water). Is this really a dangerous situation? I mean, I”m sure that it’ll kill the grass around the tracks but is having a bunch of salt on the ground a hazard?
